Milasande Institute is a Non Profit Company (NPC)  dedicated to safeguarding, sustaining, and reimagining Africa’s cultural heritage.

Based in Johannesburg and working across the continent, we bring together preservation, practice, and innovation to ensure that the knowledge of the past remains a living resource for the present, and a foundation for the future.

Heritage is at the heart of our work, from craft to the rhythms of music and oratory traditions, from art and design to the stories carried across generations, to the materials and techniques that shape daily life. We believe these practices are living systems of knowledge that hold wisdom, history, and cultural continuity.

Milasande creates pathways for this knowledge to thrive: through archiving and documentation, through community-based learning and the sharing of skills between generations, through resources that support artisans in sustaining their work, and through platforms that allow Africa’s cultural expressions to circulate and inspire.

Our vision is simple but urgent: to hold memory with care, to nurture practice with respect, and to imagine futures where African heritage is valued as a driver of sustainability, human connection, and continental development.
